The Arkansas State University-Beebe Department of Music is proud to announce new course offerings in music industry. The new courses are Music Commerce, Principles of Songwriting, Music and Recording Technology, and Private Applied Lessons in Songwriting. The program is inclusive of all genres of commercial music.
These courses are in addition to those already offered at ASU-Beebe, including Music Theory, Rock Music History, and private lessons in voice, guitar and piano, as well as wind and percussion instruments.
While the new courses can be integrated into the Associate of Fine Arts in Music degree, they are open to anyone with an interest in writing and recording music, including current students and community members. The private lessons in songwriting are also available remotely.
The courses will be taught by Dr. Brent Bristow, professor of music at ASU-Beebe. Dr. Bristow, an active performing artist, has considerable experience in commercial music, including nine years as a recording engineer. He is currently a recording artist, producer and songwriter with Emerald City Council, a progressive rock band signed to Melodic Revolution Records, of which Seth Hankerson, adjunct instructor of guitar at ASU-Beebe, is also a member.
"In recent years, more and more music students have become interested in the music industry than ever before," says Bristow. "With the availability of affordable recording technology, and the rise of platforms such as Spotify and YouTube, musicians can write, record and make their music, accessible to anyone in the world. We want to show students how to do it at a professional level, and help them understand the business aspects of copyright, publishing and licensing so that they can protect their work."
For more information on these courses, contact Dr. Bristow at jbbristow@asub.edu.
ASU-Beebe is the only two-year college in central Arkansas that offers an Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) degree. The AFA degree has an emphasis in vocal music or instrumental music, theater, graphic design or creative arts enterprise. This degree is a comprehensive two-year curriculum designed specifically for transfer toward a bachelor’s degree in fine arts.
