England Center Art Gallery Features Couples That Create
Posted Date: 2/25/25

The Arkansas State University–Beebe Art Department is proud to feature the art exhibit “Couples That Create: Under the Pecan Tree” during February.

A reception for the artists Lisa Floryshak and Joey Lindsey will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28 in the England Center Art Gallery. Admission is free and the gallery is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday throughout the month of February.

Floryshak and Lindsey have been creating “Under the Pecan Tree” since 2014 at their home in central Arkansas.

“While we share a creative space, our work could not be more different,” Floryshak said.

“I am inspired by utility and function,” Lindsey said. “Sometimes it is an antique tool or a historical artifact, but most often it is the Mingei pottery tradition and its dedication to a Wabi-sabi aesthetic. I look for simple lines and clean geometry to allow the important elements of the form to speak.”

Lindsey his work is primarily woodfired using variations of three specific glazes of Shino, Oribe, and Nuka.

“The Nuka glaze I use is an eight-hundred-year-old recipe given to me by friend and mentor, John Baymore, a recognized Japanese tea master and maker. It is made from locally sourced rice hulls, that are smoldered into a high-carbon ash and formulated into a translucent bluish-white glaze. The work done in cone six oxidation follows this same palette,” Lindsey said.

“Memory. My work is a direct reflection of what my words cannot describe in the depth of detail needed to suffice my recollections,” Floryshak said. “Each piece is a journal page, a statement about research or travel, or a simple note about the understanding of a process.”

Floryshak’s artworks are primarily in clay, silver and watercolors, with her style evident in recent travels throughout Mongolia.

“The sky and colors loom larger than anywhere I have experienced on earth. The raw undisturbed nature of the place has me fascinated and longing to return. The work is a direct reflection of my memory, aided by photographs and the field school journal hanging in the exhibition,” Floryshak said.

“I like to think of my work as painterly and whimsical. I encourage my audience to view it as they would the suspended thought bubble of a young learner; scattered, inquisitive, and playfully inconclusive,” Floryshak said.
